Winning team at 2023 IHU Surgical Data Science Summer School: Chinedu, Lorenzo, Pietro, Arun, Alexander, and Jane

I am excited to share that over the last week, I have had the amazing opportunity to attend the 2023 Surgical Data Summer School at the Institute of Image-Guided Surgery (IHU) in Strasbourg, France, with 23 other medical and PhD students from around the globe.

Over the week, IHU organized a hackathon where in groups consisting of 3 computer scientists and 3 clinicians and one clinical and one computer science mentor we brainstormed a surgical data science solution to a relevant clinical problem and each presented a 30 minute pitch. I am very proud to share that I received the best group project award and a grant from the IHU for our project Advancing Precision: AI-Powered Margin Prediction in Lumpectomy for Breast Cancer together with my fantastic team Lorenzo Arboit, Arunangshu Bhattacharyya, Alexander Geiger, Zepeng Hu, Jane Wang and our incredible mentors Chinedu Nwoye and Pietro Mascagni.

Throughout the week, we also heard keynotes and lectures from over 30 esteemed surgeons and data scientists who have each had a fundamental role in the creation of the surgical data science, including Danail Stoyanov, Daniel Elson, Giulio Antonelli, Nader Francis, Nassir Navab, Roger D. Dias, and Tom Vercauteren. In addition to these technical workshops, we had the opportunity to participate in practical labs where I learned the individual roles of each person in the OR, basic suturing technique on a chicken, and how to perform an endoscopy on a pig which helped expose the unique dynamics that take place in the OR and ideas for future research directions.

A huge thanks to my PI at UPenn Daniel Hashimoto, director of the PCASO lab for sponsoring me and Vivek Singh to attend the school and providing us the opportunity to meet researchers working at the forefront of this hugely important field. Additionally, thank you to the fantastic organizing team at IHU who are investing in the next generation of scientific talent: Nicolas Padoy, Pietro Mascagni, Vinkle Srivastav, Silvana Perretta, Agnès Gronfier, and Justine Chadefaux and the sponsors who helped make the event magical Camma, IHU, CAMI, University of Strasbourg, Medtronic, Intuitive, and Asensus Surgical.
